China’s First IPv6 Public DNS Makes its Official Debut

Recently, BII Group has officially announced the introduction of the public DNS: 240c::6666/240c::6644 of IPv6. Through free public DNS service with excellent performance, it aims to provide safe, stable, high-speed and intelligent Internet experience for the majority of IPv6 Internet users and boost the full implementation of the Action Plan for Promoting Scale Deployment of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). Meanwhile, BII has also launched a global promotion plan for IPv6 Public DNS jointly with the Global IPv6 Forum to provide better online resolution services for users worldwide.

At present, the IPv6 network has become the forerunner for countries to promote the new technological industry revolution and reshape the long-term national competitiveness, and countries in the world have accelerated the pace of transition to IPv6. At the same time, the number of IPv6 users has also exploded in the recent two years, and the development of IPv6 which has been quite for all these years has been significantly improved. However, the introduction of the IPv6 action plan will undoubtedly add a powerful impetus to the IPv6 industry which has been well prepared, and will speed up the pace of overall deployment for China’s future Internet in every aspect.

As an important part of network infrastructure, the Domain Name System (DNS) has been frequently attacked in the past three decades due to its “particularity”, and top-level domain failure, DNS hijacking and large-scale DNS attack happen occasionally, greatly affecting the global Internet industry. At present, most public DNSs that enhance user experience and ensure network security support IPv4 only, which is one of the problems constantly criticized by IPv6 users. To fully facilitate the development of IPv6, BII relies on the self-developed high-performance IPv6 DNS system to provide the public free DNS services, during which DNS: 240c :: 6666 is the first choice and DNS: 240c :: 6644 is the alternate.

BII is the only state-level engineering research center in the field of China’s future Internet and it has been always devoted to the research and promotion of IPv6 future Internet and other industrial fundamental and key technologies of IPv6 over the years. However, the introduction of the IPv6 Public DNS will undoubtedly provide global IPv6 users an excellent choice for optimizing the Internet experience, and the three major characteristics, namely, precision and rapidness, security and stability and DNS64, will fully guarantee the efficiency and stability of IPv6 network.

BII has deployed recursive nodes in many places around the world, such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, Wuhan, Chicago, Fremont, London and Frankfurt. It applies the IPv6 BGP Anycast method to deployment, so that the users can have nearby access and the access delay of domain names resolved to the root server is significantly reduced, as a result of which the speed can be greatly protected. Not only that, IPv6 Public DNS will take the initiative to synchronize the com/ net domain name, cache hotspot domain name and so on to reduce the recursive process to maximize the rapid response.

With regard to security, IPv6 Public DNS supports single-IP resolution speed limit, and security restrictions can be used to effectively prevent malicious attacks, so that users’ access security will be protected in real time. Meanwhile, IPv6 Public DNS also supports DNSSEC security resolution and verification, so that the users will not be hijacked in the access process, and neither malicious jumps nor mandatory advertisements will appear.

At the same time, IPv6 Public DNS specifically provides DNS64 resolution service to facilitate the real needs of IPv6 users to access IPv4-related services, that is, the resolution system can also respond to the request for pure IPv4 network resource resolution by pure IPv6 users, which can also avoid the trouble to some extent that the content has not be fully transformed and upgraded during the transition period from IPv4 to IPv6.

President of BII Liu Dong revealed, “The early and rapid development of IPv6 network is a key measure for China to seize the initiative of the global Internet. The construction and promotion of public infrastructure is not only a prerequisite for the large-scale deployment of IPv6, but the vision and direction of the Center over the years. The global free services provided by IPv6 Public DNS not only provide global IPv6 users a faster and more secure choice, but hope to facilitate the full promotion of the deployment of IPv6 future Internet in China.”

6DNS System Makes its Official Debut to Boost the Scale Deployment of IPv6

The BII Group (www.biigroup.com) announced in Beijing the official launch of the upgraded solution of recursive service IPv6 “6DNS system” today. The system is an upgraded overall solution of DNS recursive service system for enterprises and operators, which is designed to get through the key link of IPv6 network and application to provide users with safe, reliable, swift and easy-to-operate recursive services and boost the full implementation of the Action Plan for Promoting Scale Deployment of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6).

At present, the IPv4 addresses in the world have almost been allocated, the commercial use of IPv6 is speeding up, a large number of enterprises and operators in the world have been gradually upgraded to IPv6. All countries in the world have been clearly aware of the fact that IPv6 is not only a possible trend but an inevitable and only choice for the development of future Internet. At the same time, China has stepped up the development of IPv6 future Internet to a state-level strategic deployment with the introduction of IPv6 Action Plan, and IPv6 is imperative. However, IPv6 support on the DNS recursive system in the market is still not enough and difficult to operate, and the deployment cost is extremely high, causing great inconvenience to the enterprise upgrading.

To solve the actual needs of operators and enterprises, BII has officially launched the IPv6 upgrading solution to recursive service 6DNS system after system research and development and long-term practice verification. It helps operators and enterprises meet the challenges brought by IPv6 future Internet upgrading by making a “secure”, “swift” and “easy-to-operate” overall solution to enable them to use the IPv6 future Internet resources in a steady, secure and quick manner.

In terms of “security”, 6DNS system relies on the BII’s years of technical accumulation and professional experience first to ensure that the entire system is anti-hijacking. To use the 6DNS system can return to correct resolution result and prevent the man-in-the-middle from hijacking, tampering, attacking and filtering the global threatening domain name, providing users a green network environment.

In terms of “swiftness”, it is an excellent user experience of 6DNS system. Since most current DNS authoritative servers do not support IPv6 access, the existing dual stack network still borrows IPv4 DNS for resolution. Once the IPv4 network fails, it will affect IPv6 content access, so IPv6 users also need to rely on IPv4 networks and DNS. The 6DNS system does not affect the existing IPv4 network at all, and to supplement 6DNS to form a complete IPv6 network query access can ensure that the global IPv6 resources are accessible to the users. In addition, 6DNS uses load balancing and cache management technology to fully balance the load between servers to support high-capacity input, output and caching, and adopts multiple optimization techniques to greatly improve user query speed.

In terms of “easy-to-operate”, 6DNS system includes access control management, data statistics and domain name blacklist and other functions. The 6DNS system has a simple and clear Web management interface that can control the terminal access, set the blacklist of domains and make data statistics, including intuitively displaying the real-time data of 6DNS with graphics to provide the administrator with valuable information, following the principles of simpleness and swiftness in real sense.

President of BII Group Liu Dong said, “Before the official release of 6DNS system, we have already cooperated with more than 40 organizations in IPv6 DNS such as Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Henan Education and Research Computer Network and Shanghai University, and deployed the 6DNS system according to the characteristics of users and network environment in different organizations to provide millions of IPv6 users with services. We also hope to work with partners in the industry to jointly drive the global IPv6 development.”

As the only state-level engineering research center in the field of China’s future Internet, BII has always been focusing on the research on the fundamental key technologies and applications for the industrial development of DNS root server and IPv6 future Internet to build the “Internet Base Technology Public Service Platform” and promote global Internet connectivity. In addition, public DNS: 240c::6666 of IPv6 was also released together with 6DNS system this time, which is designed to provide free public DNS services with excellent performance to enable the IPv6 network users to have access to safe, stable, high-speed and intelligent Internet experience.

The digital economy has become the core strength of a new round of global industrial transformation and it is deeply affecting every aspect of social development. Meanwhile, the era of Internet of Everything comes with higher speed with the fundamental change in the demand for the connection of “human beings” to “things”. However, many problems have been found with the increasing number of network users, the rapid expansion of application fields, insufficient flexibility of the existing network architecture, difficulty in new business development, outdated infrastructure and network security.

To cope with the disadvantages of the current network, innovative technologies such as IPv6, SDN, NFV, 5G and edge computing have emerged at the right moment as a new vitality to the network, contributing unprecedented strength to building a softer, cloudized, functionally virtualized and hardware-unitized new generation network. In addition, the network technology is moving toward a turning point of updating development and the network will be redefined.

Network is redefined to boost network reconstruction in the name of technology

In the tide of global network transformation, actions have been taken in succession along the industry chain and parties of the industry are moving ahead hand in hand. After 120 speeches in three days of the GNTC, many innovative technologies continue to break through, and the vertical industry solutions emerge in endlessly. In addition, global operators, solution and equipment providers and large enterprises are making great efforts to deploy their own new network solutions, and actively participate in open source development and standardization of related technologies, boosting network transformation in the name of technology.

When it comes to the development trends of new generation network, many experts including Stanford Professor Nick McKeown and VP of Linux foundation Phil Robb mentioned open source and technological innovation in their speeches. The development of network technology has never stopped innovation, and the future network will also constantly upgrade and transform with the development of cloud, SDN, 5G, artificial intelligence and other technologies.

Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of H3C Group You Xuejun said when speaking of the network reform, “The future network will move toward software-oriented, intelligent and scenarized development. Software definition will be ubiquitous and will accelerate the evolution toward intelligent network, and the era of intelligent network will come”.

Global IPv6 Testing Center Releases the 2017 IPv6 Support Report

Recently, the subordinate to BII-CFIEC, Global IPv6 Testing Center (www.ipv6ready.org.cn) released the 2017 IPv6 Support Report, providing a test, update and analysis of the support for IPv6 network devices, terminals, applications and websites worldwide. The report shows that the entire industry is ready for full access to IPv6, with support for network devices, terminal products and various applications. Among them, the network devices and terminal products gain the highest IPv6 support. There are 2137 types/series of network devices in the world that have passed the IPv6 Ready Logo Certification and over 90% of the terminal operating systems support IPv6. In addition, a small number of basic applications have been able to access IPv6 and can meet the basic needs. At present, the IPv6 support rate of top 50 websites of Alexa rankings is 42%, and there is only one website in China among top 50 supporting stable IPv6 access.

Network devices have extremely high IPv6 support and have been ready for full access

With the rapid deployment of IPv6 in the world, mainstream network device manufacturers have launched a large number of IPv6 products in recent years, and they are rich in types and basically cover the original IPv4 products (including routers, switches, access servers, firewalls, VPN gateways and domain name servers, etc.), which can meet the needs of commercial deployment.

According to IPv6 Ready Logo testing and certification data, a total of 2137 types/series of devices in the world passed the IPv6 Ready Logo Phase-2 certification as of October 2017 and have been steadily increasing. Among those devices obtaining the IPv6 Ready Logo, China’s routers, switches, firewalls and gateways are far ahead of other types of devices. Compared with other network device powers such as the United States, South Korea and Japan, China has a larger number of routers, switches, security devices and other devices for more than 70%, while has relatively less applications for other device types, especially for terminal devices.

Terminal devices basically support IPv6, leaving home gateway the last checkpoint hindering the development

The one who can take the lead in making a difference in IPv6 will be able to occupy a favorable position in future competition. From the hardware point of view, the terminal products such as mobile phones and PCs launched in the past two or three years can basically fully support IPv6. However, the operating system is crucial to support IPv6 as the foundation of various applications. Therefore, the Global IPv6 Testing Center has tested the current 30 common operating system versions and results show that common operating system including mobile phones, PCs and servers can basically apply IPv6, and the support rate reaches up to 90%.

Among the 30 common operating system versions tested, Android 4.2, iOS 4.1, Windows Phone 6.5, Symbian 7.0 and other mobile phone system versions and subsequent new versions have supported IPv6.

Microsoft Windows series, Apple Mac OS X and Linux and other commonly used operating system in PCs support IPv6, and Microsoft Windows and Redhat Linux kernel operating system largely passed the IPv6 Ready Logo Certification, which provides a more powerful proof of IPv6 access capacity.

The overall IPv6 support of the operating system is relatively high, but there are still some differences between different operating systems in terms of concrete functions and implementation models. The operating system installed with IPv6 protocol stack as a default accounts for about 75%, the support of DHCPv6 (IPv6 dynamic host configuration protocol) is about 65% and that of ND RDNSS (Recursion DNS Server Automatic Discovery) is slightly lower, which is about 50%.

The support of home gateway CE devices is slightly backward by contrast. As an extended test item of IPv6 Ready Logo, there are only 17 CE devices from NetWare, ZTE, Broadcom and other enterprises in the world that have passed IPv6 Ready Logo CE Router Certification.

The operators begin to implement strict network equipment procurement requirements early and force network devices to support IPv6. However, test results show that most of the CE devices (home gateways and wireless routers, etc.) purchased by the users themselves on the market do not support IPv6, which is the key for home users to access the last mile of IPv6.

Multi-type PC applications support IPv6, which can meet the basic usage needs

The 2017 IPv6 Support Report also indicates that the IPv6-only network is still less at present due to the widespread existence of IPv4, and only a small number of applications can support IPv4 and IPv6. However, it shall be pointed out that although the overall support of application software is not high for IPv6, it can indeed meet the basic needs of common users.

Overseas websites have high IPv6 support, but only one of the top 50 websites in China supports IPv6

At present, websites supporting IPv6 are on the increase, and websites such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft Bing now provide permanent IPv6 access service. To encourage more applications and services to support IPv6, the Global IPv6 Test Center has designed and developed IPv6 Enabled Logo Certification. In addition, statistics show that a total of 2550 websites in the world have passed the test and obtained IPv6 Enabled Logo Certification from April 2009 when the project was launched to October 2017.

The monitoring data of the Global IPv6 Testing Center also shows that IPv6 support rate of top 50 websites of Alexa rankings is 42%, and Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo and other websites can be stably accessed through IPv6. In contrast, most websites in China have no IPv6 access, and only Tencent of the top 50 websites has stable IPv6 access address.

The Global IPv6 Testing Center subordinate to CFIEC has carried out a comprehensive test and analysis of IPv6 support from different levels such as terminals, networks and applications, etc. According to the 2017 IPv6 Support Report, network devices, terminal devices and operations system have good IPv6 support.  From the application point of view, efforts shall also be increased for upgrade due to long-term existence of IPv4 to promote the large-scale promotion and application of IPv6, especially various websites shall speed up the pace of access to IPv6. In addition, colleagues of the industry chain shall also pay more attention to these weaknesses to jointly promote the rapid and smooth transition of IPv6 and embrace the era of intelligence of Internet of Everything.

The future Internet is IPv6-based, but IPv6 is not the entire content of the future Internet but the starting point. Based on the IPv6 technology with enormous address space, new ideas and elements are constantly added to the new technology platform to solve major technical challenges through innovation and breakthrough. In addition, the future Internet will certainly be more intelligent through evolution and development, and a broader market will also be fully open.
